EMS Silver Medal 2009

The 2009 EMS Silver Medal is awarded to Lennart Bengtsson
for his outstanding leadership in the development of numerical weather prediction and climate research.

The Award Ceremony will be held on 30 September 2009 during the
EMS Annual Meeting in Toulouse, France.

World Meteorological Day 2009

Each year, on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization, its 188 Members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme. This Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System.

This year, the theme is “Weather, climate and the air we breathe”.

 

The "State of Polar Reasearch" released
The State of Polar Research document describes some of the striking discoveries during IPY. It also recommends priorities for future action to ensure that society is best informed about ongoing polar change and its likely future evolution and global impacts. A major IPY science conference will take place in Oslo in June 2010.

EMS Outreach & Communication Award 2008
The EMS established the Outreach & Communication Award to acknowledge projects that explore new and effective ways to communicate the science of meteorology,climatology and related fields to the general public.In 2008 two projects were selected and the Awards were presented in the Media Session of the 8th EMS Annual Meeting in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on 1 October 2008.
Svein Haaland & Exstremværuka, Norway, for the Extreme Weather Week Project - an outstanding example of new and effective ways to communicate knowledge about weather and climate to the public.
EUMETNET EMMA Project for the development and presentation of the meteoalarm.eu Website - an outstanding example of how to make the general public aware of severe weather across Europe.

Earth Observation Handbook released
The Earth Observation Handbook – just released and available online – explains the vital role played by Earth observation satellites in providing the information needed by governments and policymakers to make well-informed decisions for a sustainable future. Prepared under the auspices of ESA on behalf of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), the report provides an overview of existing Earth observation (EO) missions, their instruments and the plans of more than 30 space agencies for upcoming missions and instruments. It is the most up-to-date and comprehensive statement of governmental EO programmes available.

 

New EMS President elected
The EMS Council elected Dr. Fritz Neuwirth, Austria, as the new president of the EMS for a three-year term.  

 

New EMS Member Society
The Israel Meteorological Society has joined the EMS as 36th Member Society.

International Polar Day
June 18th, 2008 marks the fifth quarterly International Polar Day, this time focussing on Land and Life. For more information visit the IPY site.

 

EMS Silver Medal Laureates 2008
Karin Labitzke will receive the EMS Silver Medal for her many and longstanding contributions to the development and the advancement of the science of meteorology and furtherance of international collaboration.
René Morin will receive the EMS Silver Medal for his outstanding contributions to the development of lasting collaboration amongst the national meteorological societies in Europe that led to the foundation of the EMS.
The EMS Silver Medal was established in 2008 and is presented annually to a person who has made distinguished contributions to the development of meteorology in Europe.
In 2008 two EMS Silver Medals are awarded.
The Awards will be presented at the 8th EMS Annual Meeting,
29 September - 3 October 2008, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
